The Morning Sprint You Can't Afford to Lose
Every morning at Walt Disney World, there's a silent race happening on tens of thousands of phones. At 7:00 AM (or earlier for resort guests), fingers are frantically tapping the My Disney Experience app, trying to snag Lightning Lane passes for the most popular rides.
Some sell out in minutes. Others last until afternoon. We tracked Lightning Lane sellout times across 64 days of data to build the definitive sellout clock.
The Fastest Sellouts at Walt Disney World
Here are the rides that sell out first -- and how consistently they do it:
Tier 1: Gone Before Breakfast
| Ride | Median Sellout Time | Sellout Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Flight of Passage | 8:05 AM | 94% of days (60/64) |
| Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind | 9:46 AM | 88% of days |
| TRON Lightcycle / Run | 10:16 AM | 84% of days |
| Seven Dwarfs Mine Train | 10:20 AM | 81% of days |
| Rise of the Resistance | 10:37 AM | 78% of days |
Flight of Passage is in a league of its own. On 94% of tracked days -- 60 out of 64 -- the Lightning Lane sold out completely, with a median sellout time of just 8:05 AM. That's barely an hour after booking opens for resort guests and just over an hour for day guests.
Tier 2: Gone by Lunch
| Ride | Median Sellout Time | Sellout Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Slinky Dog Dash | 11:42 AM | 72% of days |
| Frozen Ever After | 12:15 PM | 65% of days |
| Remy's Ratatouille Adventure | 1:08 PM | 58% of days |
| Expedition Everest | 1:45 PM | 52% of days |
| Space Mountain | 2:30 PM | 44% of days |
Tier 3: Usually Available
These rides rarely sell out but can on peak days:
| Ride | Sellout Rate |
|---|---|
| Big Thunder Mountain | 23% of days |
| Haunted Mansion | 18% of days |
| Tower of Terror | 15% of days |
| Rock 'n' Roller Coaster | 12% of days |
| Test Track | 11% of days |
The Booking Strategy
Based on the sellout clock, here's the optimal booking order depending on which park you're visiting:
Animal Kingdom Day
- Book Flight of Passage LL immediately at 7:00 AM. This is non-negotiable. With a 94% sellout rate and an 8:05 AM median sellout, you have roughly 65 minutes from the moment booking opens. Hesitate and it's gone.
- After riding FoP, book Expedition Everest or Na'vi River Journey as your next LL.
- Standby Kilimanjaro Safaris early (waits are shortest before 10 AM regardless of LL).
EPCOT Day
- Book Cosmic Rewind at 7:00 AM. The 9:46 AM median sellout gives you a bit more breathing room than FoP, but don't risk it.
- Follow with Frozen Ever After (12:15 PM sellout) or Remy's (1:08 PM).
- Test Track rarely sells out -- save it for afternoon.
Magic Kingdom Day
- Book TRON at 7:00 AM. The 10:16 AM sellout time means you need to be in the first wave.
- Follow with Mine Train (10:20 AM) -- yes, these two sell out almost simultaneously, which means you may only get one. Prioritize the one you want more.
- Space Mountain can wait until early afternoon.
Hollywood Studios Day
- Book Rise of the Resistance at 7:00 AM. The 10:37 AM sellout is the most forgiving of the top tier, but it's also the most expensive individual LL purchase.
- Follow with Slinky Dog Dash (11:42 AM sellout).
- Tower of Terror and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster rarely sell out -- book them in the afternoon.
The DLP Evening Sellout Pattern
Disneyland Paris has a unique quirk we didn't see at any other park: evening sellout spikes. While WDW rides sell out progressively throughout the morning, several DLP attractions see their Lightning Lane availability suddenly evaporate around 5:00-6:00 PM.
The culprit? DLP's Lightning Lane Multi pass allows same-day purchases deep into the afternoon, and European guests tend to make purchasing decisions later in the day. By late afternoon, a critical mass of guests decides to buy in, and availability craters.
If you're visiting DLP, don't assume a ride with afternoon availability will still be available at dinner. Book by 4:00 PM at the latest.
What Happens When LL Sells Out?
When a ride's Lightning Lane sells out, two things happen:
- Standby waits increase by 15-30 minutes on average, because all remaining demand flows into the regular queue.
- Cascade effects kick in -- nearby rides also see standby increases as guests pivot to alternatives (see our cascade effect analysis).
This is why booking early matters even for Tier 2 rides. Every LL you don't buy is extra standby time stacking onto your day.
The Cost-Benefit Math
Is Lightning Lane worth it? Here's a quick calculation:
- Flight of Passage standby on a sold-out LL day: average 112 minutes
- Flight of Passage with LL: ~10 minutes in the LL queue
- Time saved: ~100 minutes
- LL cost: ~$22 per person (Individual Lightning Lane)
- Value of your time: If a family of 4 saves 100 minutes, that's 6.7 hours of combined family time for $88. That's $13/hour per person -- less than the cost of a turkey leg.
For Flight of Passage, the math almost always works. For Haunted Mansion (which rarely sells out and has a standby of ~25 minutes), it's a harder sell.
The Bottom Line
Lightning Lane is a race, and the starting gun fires at 7:00 AM. If you want the most popular rides, you need to be ready at open with a clear booking priority:
- FoP > Cosmic Rewind > TRON > Mine Train > Rise -- in that order of urgency
- Book your #1 priority the instant booking opens
- Don't waste morning booking windows on rides that rarely sell out
- At DLP, book by 4:00 PM -- the evening rush is real
Set your alarm. Open the app. Book fast. Then go enjoy the magic.
