Common Mistakes to Avoid

Learn from the mistakes of millions of visitors before you. These are the eight things first-timers get wrong most often.

  1. Not making dining reservations — They open 60 days out and the best spots fill immediately. Book the day they become available or you'll be eating counter service all week.
  2. Trying to do everything in one day — Each park deserves at least a full day. Rushing through two parks means you'll enjoy neither.
  3. Skipping rope drop — The first hour has the shortest waits of the entire day. Arriving at park opening can save you hours of standing in line.
  4. No midday break — Heat and crowds peak 12-3 PM. Go back to the hotel, rest, swim, and return refreshed for the evening.
  5. Wearing new shoes — You'll walk 8-12 miles per day. Break in comfortable shoes beforehand or you'll regret it by lunch.
  6. Not using mobile ordering — Waiting in food lines wastes 30+ minutes. Order ahead on the My Disney Experience app and skip the queue.
  7. Ignoring the weather — Florida afternoon rain is guaranteed May through September. Bring ponchos — they're cheaper than buying them at the park.
  8. Over-scheduling — Leave breathing room for spontaneous discoveries and snack stops. Some of the best Disney moments are unplanned.

Packing Essentials

What to bring, what's nice to have, and what to leave at home.

Must-Have

  • Comfortable broken-in shoes
  • Portable phone charger (you'll drain your battery)
  • Ponchos (cheaper than buying at the park)
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+

Nice to Have

  • Cooling towels
  • Portable fan
  • Autograph book (for kids meeting characters)
  • Glow sticks/light-up toys (for nighttime)
  • Zip-lock bags (for phones on water rides)

Skip

  • Full-size umbrella (too bulky in crowds)
  • Selfie stick (banned in parks)
  • Large coolers (won't pass security)
  • Wagons for kids over 3 (use stroller instead)

Day-of Tips

You're at the park. Here's how to make the most of it.

Arrive 30-45 minutes before park opening — the gate crowd builds fast. Being early means you're walking onto rides while others are still parking.
Head to the most popular ride first — Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom, Flight of Passage at Animal Kingdom. The wait triples within an hour of opening.
Use the My Disney Experience app — for real-time wait times, mobile ordering, and Lightning Lane purchases. It's essential, not optional.
Take a midday break between 12-2 PM — return for the cooler evening hours when lines are shorter and the parks are more magical.
Stay for the fireworks/nighttime show — it's the emotional peak of your day. Find your spot 30-45 minutes early for the best view.
Drink water constantly — Florida humidity is no joke, even in winter. Every quick-service restaurant will give you a free cup of ice water.
